I’m using this blog to collect and share high quality info I find about physics education. I’ve realized after a few years of teaching that science pedagogy is still murky. Practices with replicable positive results are much rarer than I once thought, and a lot of what gets passed around as common knowledge doesn’t hold up to testing. “Learning Styles” was a recent concept that was popular for years despite showing zero or even negative effects on learning. Collecting info on what actually works in one place will be useful to me, and maybe to you as well!
What I’ll write about first:
- A chapter-by-chapter summary of my favorite pedagogy book: Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn. Filled with useful advice backed by data and learning science.
- Data on mastery learning (it works!!) and how I’m using mastery learning in my courses.
- My experience using blended learning (mostly very positive).
- Ooooof: “A total of 90 interventions have been evaluated in Institute of Education Studies commissioned RCTs. Of these: 11 interventions (12%) were found to produce positive effects; 79 interventions (88%) were found to produce weak or no positive effects” – Source. Which interventions DID work? What else can we take from this?
